Hey mama, welcome to the 60s…

Had a wonderful time at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton last night, watching that great musical Hairspray.

Brian Conley was just hilarious as Edna Turnblad, the larger-than-life mother of our plump heroine Tracy.  Les Dennis was for some reason absent from his role as the dad, Wilbur, but his understudy Carl Sanderson played a very good part.  His ‘sentimental’ duet with Brian, Timeless to Me, was hilarious.  Both actors struggled to maintain a straight face throughout.

Hairspray returns to the West Midlands in October, with a run at the Birmingham Hippodrome.  I was thinking of going again, but – aarrgghh – there are not surprisingly few tickets left.

It really is a great show; the ultimate feelgood fest, though the story has deeper themes of segregation, prejudice and the Civil Rights movement.  While it contains songs you may not know before you go, the numbers are all catchy and will quickly become familiar.

Last night’s audience were very ‘up for it’ and gave the cast a well-deserved standing ovation.

You can’t stop the beat!
