Pawn Stars

I love going to the theatre, and yesterday went to see the brilliant musical Chess at the Grand in Wolverhampton.

It was a new production, directed by Craig Revel Horwood, and had his camp stamp all over it.  There were cast members dressed as the chess pieces, in these fantastic black and white costumes.

James Fox, who played Judas in the amazing production of Jesus Christ Superstar we saw back in 2004, played Freddie Trumper, the American chess champion, and was brilliant.  Daniel Koek, who played the Russian, was also magnificent.  Shona White was superb as Florence, the female lead, the role originated by Elaine Paige.  The part was presumably written by Tim Rice for Elaine, as I could easily imagine her playing the part and Shona was very similar.

I didn’t know too many of the songs – just the big numbers I Know Him So Well, Anthem and One Night in Bangkok – so it was interesting to hear something not so familiar.  There was no orchestra as such; all the actors played instruments on stage, which was different and innovative.
